Weekly Grub: Bannock Bread

Simple is good.

Bread is good.

Therefore bannock bread is the shit.

For those of you who have no idea as to which baked treat I am referring to, let me introduce you to a backcountry chef’s greatest friend. Bannock bread is a simple and quick flat bread consisting of flour, baking soda, water, salt and love. It’s got the versatility of a swiss army knife and the fresh bread smell of your favorite bakery.

How shalt I cook thee, oh bannock bread? Let me count the ways:

– In a pan over a campfire

– Balled up on a stick over a campfire

…and any other ingenious ways your starving brain can think of. And because of it’s versatility and ability to add calories to any adventurer’s constantly depleting resources, Bannock will become your go-to basic food group. You can make:

– Pizza!

– Pancakes!

– You can add apples, berries, bananas, raisins or any other of your fave fruits and you’ve got yourself a DELISH snack or breakfast!

– Bannock marshmallows: roast the bannock on a stick and add some honey or maple syrup!

Here’s a few other super cool bannock recipes to check out as well

Basic Bannock Bread Recipe:

1 cup of flour

1 teaspoon of baking powder

1/4 teaspoon of salt

Combine the ingredients adding just enough water to make the dough firm and form the dough into a flat bread shape about 1 inch thick. Then just cook it how you like it! Fried in a grease pan, like a mallow on a stick, you could attempt to make a danish if you really wanted to…the options are endless!

Thanks for this simple recipe!! Just made it & it turned out awesome. I added some spices cuz I like my bread with a bit of flavor. Yummy & simple. Made about 7 small breads (is that how I should refer to it?).
