Rock climbing in the Gran Sabana’s Acopan Tepui, Venezuela

Posted by

I first saw this place in the King Lines rock climbing film by Big Up Productions a few years ago, then it popped up in a Hollywood film called UP. Big Up Productions filmed Chris Sharma and a few other climbers, bouldering some interesting rock formations atop Acopan Tupui in Kukenam Tepui in Venezuela. UP is a animated Hollywood film about fulfilling a life long dream of visiting Angel Falls. Both are great films!

Since learning of this place it has always been in the back of my mind, and a place I will visit. Not too many people know Acopan Tepui by name, they only know Angel Falls, the highest and most spectacular fall in the world, standing 3,212 feet high! Acopan Tepui and Angel Falls share the Parque Nacional Canaima (Canaima National Park) in Venezuela. Most transportation within the park is done by light plane — you can also get around by foot and canoe in the dense jungle.

I was recently reading Mikey Shaefer’s website about a recent trip of his to the area. Mikey along with rock climbing partners Jonathan Thesenga, Brittany Griffith and Kate Rutherford, climbed the overhanging east face of Acopan Tepui, establishing a new free route rating in at a 5.12c. Check out some of their photos.
