Emilie Drinkwater went to the Indian Karakoram this summer with the likes of Janet Bergman and Freddie Wilkinson. She had never been above 14,000 feet, but put up two first ascents–Pumo Kangri (6400 m) and Stegosaurus (6660 m). Emilie owns Cloudsplitter Mountain Guides with her husband, lives in Wilmington, New York, and can be seen on rock and ice throughout the [...]

I spoke with Chad Foti of the New Paltz Climbing Cooperative (NPCC) a couple days before its grand opening (80 people came out for it!). The New Paltz community has created a unique climbing space meant to bring people together, and Foti shared with me how it all got started. Where did the idea for the NPCC get started? The initial [...]

Some of you may know Silas through Alpine Logic, the guiding company he started in 2007. He recently obtained the highest guiding certification after years of hard work and has become one the few in the States (less than 80) to obtain the IFMGA certification. While studying Parks, Recreation and Tourism at the University of Maine, Silas quickly realized his passion for [...]

With no other projects at hand, the 21 year old Lincoln, Massachusetts native, hiked up Jaws II on his first go after a four hour rest from the 90 degree heat that has been rolling through the Northeast. Working the route for a total of two weeks, on and off, he finally figured out his own beta that eventually lead to his send. Currently Foley lives in Squamish, British Colombia where he attends Quest University. He says he didn't get to climb that much because of the rainy conditions during the school here. With not many training options in the Squaimish area during the rainy months, Foley assisted in raising $20,000 to construct the Universities climbing gym, where he and his friends are psyched to help develop the facility. Here is what he had to say in his recent send of Jaws II:

The Access Fund and CRAG-VT (Climbing Resource Access Group of Vermont) recently announced that road repairs to the Quarry Road have been fixed. The road was the primary access to three of Vermont best climbing areas — Bolton Quarries, Carcass Crag and 82 Crag. The damage and expenses were so large, it would have nearly drained all the funds CRAG-VT [...]

Joe Kinder, aka Joe Kind Kid the Cream Puff, makes his way back east occasionally, but for a while now, he’s been out west crushing stone like Jaws crushes innocent white folk. I caught up with him a couple days before he embarked on a climbers dream trip–Europe than on to South Africa. Full of psyche and energy, here is what Joe [...]

I caught up with Phillip Schaal on his recent visit back east. We talked while he painted the inside of his mom’s new addition to her house. You could say Schaal has had some adversity while playing basketball, a sprained ankle and busted up ribs. But that hasn’t stopped him from sending V Hards in Australia, Hueco, Colorado, or anywhere [...]

I caught up with Justin Sanford, a contributor of the Adirondack Bouldering Blog, after I watched the video posted at the bottom of this article. The video highlights a sweet overhanging problem that, as Justin explains, has essentially three starts, one of which hasn’t been linked from start to finish. I was also interested in the history behind the wooden [...]
